Howie Smith
Howie Smith, virtuoso saxophone player, composer and jazz musician, holds music degrees from Ithaca College and the University of Illinois, and has been the coordinator of Jazz Studies at Cleveland State University since 1979. He has presented numerous concerts and workshops throughout the United States, Canada, South America, Europe, and Australia, and has worked with musicians as diverse as Aretha Franklin, Dizzy Gillespie, Elvis Presley, and John Cage. His recordings are equally diverse: from big bands (the Frank Mantooth Jazz Orchestra), to small groups (the Australian quartet Jazz Co/op), to chamber music (solo performances with the Cleveland Chamber Symphony). His catalog of compositions is extensive and recordings of his work can be heard on Philips, Polydor, Optimism and Sea Breeze Labels. His music for jazz ensembles is available through the C.L. Barnhouse Co., Doug Beach Music, Kendor Music Inc., Otama Music and Walrus Music Publishing. He has twice served as co-chair of both the Jazz Fellowships and the Music Overview panels for the National Endowment of the Arts.
